A new Demo Reel and a Comic Tab!

It’s always exciting updating my demo reel and my website! It allows me to step back and look at the work I have helped create on a team or projects I have created on my own. With every demo reel update, I always have to go through and see what clips can be cut because of time or because I have added a stronger clip in its place.

I’m really excited for this 2023 update, because I was able to show some of my work from Marvel’s Hit-Monkey! This show will always hold a special place in my heart because it was where I really got to explore Toon Boom Harmony, and it is the first TV series I was an Animation Lead on. We had a great team on that show, and I’m excited to be working with them again on Hit-Monkey Season 2!

Over the last 5 or so years, I have been creating comics for fun. Sometimes they are 1 page in length, sometimes they are 10+ pages in length. Each time I learn a lot about panel layout, camera angels, and what is important to tell the story. As I looked back I realized I had a nice pile stacking up, so I decided to create a comic tab on my website. Give it a look!

Until next post,

GRIFFIN

Here is a small tutorial on the creation of the Griffin illustration!

Griffin_Rough_2_Tim_Kafantaris.jpg

Thumbnailing

At the beginning of the project, I will start sketching out the initial idea. Thumbnailing a few different ideas to choose from.

ROUGHS

Shortly after thumbnailing, I will start to think more about the composition, making sure the image silhouettes read clearly and are broken down into the rule of thirds.

TIEDOWNS

Once I get the Roughs into a place I’m happy with, I’ll start cleaning it up. To start I will lower the opacity of the rough sketch and create a new layer above it. I start to tiedown the shapes and form of the illustration to clarify it more.

CLEAN UP

Once again, I’ll start with a new layer above the tiedowns and start to put the final line down. Adding thick and thin lines to add more depth into the outlines.

FLATS

I’ll drop down some initial colors below the Clean Up layer, or better known as Flats! These colors might not even be the final colors, but they help create a way to select giant areas at a time to paint and change through out the coloring phase. In this case, I could easily select the color of the beak with a selection tool and start coloring on it, with out having to worry about coloring on the fur.

HIGHLIGHTS &SHADOW

Once I’m happy with the colors, I’ll create two more layers. Once for shadows, and another one for highlights. Sometimes the layers might be set to a specific blending mode like Multiply or Overlay. Depending on the illustration I might just go with black shadows that opacity are set to 50% on multiple, while other times I might actually select the darker color I want to represent the shadows. Same with the highlights.

EFX

The final stage of the illustration is adding some effects to help make it pop! This might be gradients to help further darken areas or even add blur to a layer for atmospheric perspective. For this illustration, I blurred the foreground to take it out of focus.

Thanks for taking the time to read this behind the scenes tutorial on my process. I hope you enjoyed it.

The store is open!

I recently got my store on my website up and ready to go! Currently you can purchase my art book, From Start to Finish Book 1, and my latest comic, Together, from the store.

For those still interested in buying my digital content from Gumroad, that is still possible! My gumroad store is still open and I plan to leave it like that.

Thanks for the support!

Together: One Shot Comic

Inspiration can strike at anytime...

In March of 2020 I drew what was supposed to be a one page comic, inspired by a page layout I saw of Alex Vede. His Instagram post from Jan 25th 2020 showed 3 close up panels at the top of the page and a establishing shot at the bottom. I tried to mimic that layout with my own story.

Fast forward to November of 2020, I decided to explore the story a bit further! The one page comic slowly became a full comic issue that you are reading now. I learned a lot from creating this comic. From page layout to storytelling, needing to have character designs locked at the beginning, and a little bit more about setting deadlines (what we all hate and need at the same time).

Thanks for taking the time to read this short story below.

Enjoy the story and want to support it? You can purchase a PDF version of the comic from the store on my website, or Gumroad if you prefer. Links below!

Inktober 2020

Another year, another Inktober! 2020 has been crazy to say the least and it was nice to do something that was consistent for 31 day straight to help take my mind off things. I decided to go digital this year 31 day challenge to sharpen up my procreate skills a bit. It’s a great program and I love that it records the process while you are making the illustration. If you haven’t check it out the program yet, be sure to! Below are some of my favorites entries from this year Inktober.

A STORY ABOUT FINDING YOUR GROOVE

AND HELPING OTHERS ALONG THE WAY

Towards the end of 2018 I had a family member, Lauren, reach out to me about creating a children’s book with her. I thought it was a great idea! She would write it and I would illustrate it, what a perfect combo! This was perfect at the time as well because I had been thinking more and more about if I would be interested in drawing children’s books or not. It turned out to be something I’m very interested in and enjoy doing!

The rhyming children book was printed last year and the first run of 100 sold out. We went back to the printer this year had another run of 300 printed.

We would love for you to check it out!

Sketchbook Drop 2019

Here are some sketchbook illustrations I’ve been making as of late. Working digital is great, but there is something about creating a sketch or an illustration traditionally that always feels more natural.

Inktober 2019

Another Inktober has come and gone. This year I decided to make my entries digital, using the program Procreate. Every Inktober I focus on something different to get better at in my art work. 2017 was digital inking and 2018 was traditional inking. For this year I didn’t have a specific goal (besides not having Inktober take over my life ha) but any days I had a good amount of time to sit down and really focus, I tried to play more with shapes and the different digital brushes in procreate. Below are a few of my favorites from 2019, each has their own little story you can read by clicking on the image.
